What Config 2026 changed for design systems

Figma Config 2026 was mostly motion, shaders, code layers and agents. Here is what it changed for design systems, with beta status for each item.

Config 2026 changed less for design systems than the headlines suggest. The June 24 announcements were about motion, shaders, code layers, the Figma agent and Weave tools. The news that touches libraries, guidelines and code arrived later, at Config India in October.

I read Figma's own recap, its forum roundup and the Config India help article. Statuses below are as of October 31, 2026, and most items are still in beta.

What did Figma announce at Config 2026?

Figma's June 24, 2026 posts list eight items, and most were in open beta or on a waitlist. The two Figma posts do not always use the same status words, so the table gives both.

Announcement Forum roundup status Recap blog wording Design system angle
Figma Motion Open beta "Starting today" Animate a component once and the motion carries to every file that uses it. Dev Mode shows timing, easing and keyframes
Shader fills and effects Open beta; Figma-made shaders on all plans Interactive shaders "coming soon" Shaders can be exported through MCP or converted to code
Figma agent updates Open beta, all paid plans Launched to everyone Skills and third-party connections
Generative plugins Open beta Publishing to a team "soon" Describe a tool, the agent builds a plugin
Weave tools Open beta "Now available" AI image tools in the file
Code layers Coming soon, waitlist Early access "starting in July" Work with code on the canvas
Agent in FigJam and Slides Coming soon, waitlist Waitlist None directly
3D transforms Coming soon, waitlist Not covered in my read None directly

The Config India help article, from October 2026, lists code layers in open beta, rolling out to all plans. It also says creating and editing within code layers was free on paid plans through November 4, 2026, and that after that date all code layer tasks use AI credits (Figma Help: What's new from Config India 2026). So the forum's "coming soon" is out of date for code layers.

Did Config 2026 announce anything about variables?

Not in the two June posts I read. Neither the forum roundup nor the recap blog mentions variables or libraries.

Figma's variables news came earlier. Its Schema 2025 recap, dated October 28, 2025, said the Professional plan gets 10 modes per collection and Organization gets 20. It also said variables import and export would arrive in November 2025 (Figma blog: Schema 2025). For the export steps and what the import accepts, see how to export Figma variables as DTCG JSON.

If you want the format side of that story, the design tokens spec is covered in the DTCG anniversary post.

What changed for design systems after Config?

Three design system items came out of Config India in October 2026. All are in the same help article, with these statuses:

  • Guidelines: open beta. Guidance files attach to a published library, and the agent receives them when someone designs with that library. Prompts can cost more credits because of the extra context.
  • Code sources: closed beta. You add a GitHub repo or npm package to a library, and teammates who enable the library get the agent's code context without extra setup. Access is limited to a small group.
  • Centralized design systems: preview. A planned single place for design libraries, code libraries and guidelines, with a dependency map and diagnostic reports.

The same article lists Figma Specs in open beta, available on Education, Starter, Professional, Organization and Enterprise plans.

Guidelines have details worth knowing. The help page for them says the files can be Markdown, plain text or JSON, that the combined size can't exceed 200 KB, and that the feature is in beta for Professional, Education, Organization and Enterprise plans (Figma Help: Add guidelines files to a design library). The two Figma pages list slightly different plans for guidelines, so check your own plan.

What should a design system team do now?

Do the boring things first. Most of the announced work is in beta, so changes are likely. Naming and publishing are not.

Figma's own advice for helping the agent understand a library is plain: use semantic variable names, group variables into collections, and publish the library. The help page gives color/surface/primary as a good name and says blue-500 does not say when to use a value (Figma Help: refine components and variables for the agent).

Then try one guidelines file on one library. Keep it short, since the help page asks for focused files and says repeated guidance across files can raise credit use.

Skip anything tagged waitlist or closed beta until you have access and a reason.

FAQ

Did Figma Config 2026 announce new variable features?

Not in Figma's June 24 recap blog or the forum roundup, as far as I can read. Variable import and export and higher mode limits were announced earlier, at Schema 2025 in October 2025.

What are Figma agent guidelines?

It is a beta feature where you attach instruction files to a published library. The agent gets them automatically when someone designs with that library. The files can be Markdown, plain text or JSON, up to 200 KB combined.

Are Figma code layers available now?

Figma's Config India help article lists code layers in open beta, rolling out to all plans. Creating and editing in them was free on paid plans through November 4, 2026; after that, code layer tasks use AI credits. The June forum roundup had listed them as coming soon with a waitlist.

Does the Figma agent need a paid plan?

Figma's October 23, 2026 blog post says full access is on Full seats in Professional, Organization and Enterprise plans, plus some Education plans. It lists limited availability on Starter (Figma blog).
